2019 New Colombo Plan scholars announced

Australia’s best and brightest students have been awarded life-changing New Colombo Plan scholarships in 2019, including four undergraduates who will live, study, learn languages and gain work experience in Thailand.

Australian Ambassador to Thailand HE Mr Paul Robilliard said the New Colombo Plan was a practical example of Australia’s commitment to learn from its neighbours in the region.  

“In 2019, the New Colombo Plan will support 125 of Australia’s emerging leaders – including six Indigenous Australians – to build strong networks and gain a deep understanding of locations across the Indo-Pacific, including Thailand,” Ambassador Robilliard said.

“The New Colombo Plan is a long-term investment in our relationship with Thailand. We are sending our best and brightest young scholars to learn from the people of Thailand, knowing it will help create enduring bonds of friendship and engagement over the decades to come.”

New Colombo Plan 2019 Thailand scholars include:

• Ms Taylor Meers (Fellow)
• Mr Malachi Murljacic
• Mr Fraser Lawrance
• Ms Courtney Taylor

New Colombo Plan 2019 Thailand scholars will study a broad range of disciplines including Business Management, Science, and International Law at Thammasat University, Bangkok University and Mahidol University.

Scholars will also gain real-life work experience in Thailand through internships, practicums and mentorships with private sector organisations.

Private sector engagement is central to the value of the New Colombo Plan. Scholars return to Australia with solid experience and an appreciation of the workplace culture of Thailand, becoming part of a new generation with cross-cultural skills and a deep understanding of the Indo-Pacific.

Ambassador Robilliard said New Colombo Plan Thailand scholars had demonstrated academic excellence, exceptional leadership, and a firm commitment to engaging with the people of Thailand and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

“The New Colombo Plan is equipping these exceptional young Australians with the skills and experience needed to succeed in a region that is crucial to Australia’s prosperity and security.”
